Phase 2 of Singapore’s reopening after the circuit breaker period is well underway. But clearly, COVID-19 has disrupted life as we know it. We must be prepared for the new normal.
According to the latest labour market report released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on 15 June 2020, the country’s unemployment rate climbed to its highest in 10 years, with the jobless rate among Singapore citizens at 3.5 per cent.
The number of job vacancies has also declined. There are now only about seven jobs available for every 10 jobseekers.
But if you want to look at these facts from a glass half full perspective, there are jobs out there.
This is not an exhaustive list, but here are seven roles to consider if you are searching for an opening:
1. Safety Management Assistant (Preschool Centre)
If you enjoy working with young children, have a pleasant disposition with excellent communication skills, and are interested in frontline work, you might like this one.
-Conduct health checks at arrival for staff, children and visitors
-Assist with safe distancing measures between classes during drop off and pick up times, including crowd control
-Assist with safe entry measures

2. Warehouse Assistant
Might not be an easy job as it involves physical work and manual labour, but this job will keep you fit and healthy.
-Receive cargo from incoming shipment
-Verify and note the count and condition of cargo received
-Segregate cargo received and store in proper location

3) Inspection/Enforcement Officer
For those with experience being a safety officer or carrying out inspections at construction sites, you may want to check this out.
-Perform inspections on facilities, construction sites and dormitories
-Carry out enforcement duties and follow-up on compliance of offences
-Prepare report after inspections and audits

4) Trainee Store Manager (Koi)
Bubble tea fans, this one’s for you!
-Assist with daily operation duties (kitchen and service)
-Lead and train staff
-Stock ordering and inventory

5) Cashier/Retail Assistant (NTUC FairPrice)
Supermarkets have become the go-to place during the height of the pandemic. This job is right for you if you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the retail scene.
-Operating the POS cash register and packing for customer purchases
-Provide prompt, helpful and courteous service to customers at all times
-Perform stacking, display and replenishment of products on the shelves
-Assist in loading and unloading of goods

6) Lab Technologist (COVID-19 Testing)
Have you had any hands-on experience with molecular lab technologies? Here is something you might be keen on.
-Prepare and perform PCR tests on patient specimens and report results of the COVID-19 tests
-Receive and sort specimens, data entry of test requests
$2,500 – $3,650
7) Delivery Rider (McDonald’s)
Were you one of those who really missed this fast-food place during the circuit breaker closure? With this job, you can have all the burgers and fries you want (after work, of course).
-Provide delivery services to McDonald’s customers
-Achieve targeted delivery service time and accuracy standards
-Follow food safety procedures during the transfer and packing of all completed products for delivery
