Believing that everyone should benefit from quality pre-school education, the Bright Horizon Fund, a programme under the NTUC-U Care Fund, aims to give children from less privileged families a level playing field.
Such was the case for Vani (not her real name), a student of NTUC First Campus’ (NFC) My First Skool in Bishan.
Illiterate and reserved prior to attending school, Vani blossomed under the care of her teachers and is now a confident, sociable child.
Nurturing Minds
With both her parents in jail, Vani has no parental support and initially spent most days idle with her grandmother in a one-room rental flat. However, wanting her grandchild to have a good headstart in life, Vani’s grandmother approached the REACH Family Service Centre (FSC) for help and she was referred to NFC.
Ms Boby Heidinza, the school’s principal, was immediately able to relate to Vani as she herself came from a challenging background.
Not only was Vani enrolled in the Read-to-Reach programme under the Bright Horizons Fund, attending intensive lessons with four classmates to bridge the literacy gap between them and their peers, Vani also embarked on excursions with the school.
