Learning Confidence in the Line of Duty

Senior Waitress, Zakiyyah Zainal

While the petite 26-year-old exudes confidence in the way she deals with her customers today, Zakiyyah Zainal revealed how it wasn’t always the case when she first started working in the service line at the tender age of 16.

Today, she works as a senior waitress, having spent the last seven years honing her craft at Dusk, one of the restaurants managed by the Mount Faber Leisure Group.

“My first job was as a dishwasher at the Hyatt before my cousin introduced me to the banquet line. I tried that out for two years, but as I was still young, it was difficult. I eventually transferred to serve the breakfast buffet line, but the crowds there were overwhelming and I couldn’t cope,” said Zakiyyah.

Embracing all aspects of restaurant operations, Zakiyyah has also taken on more administrative responsibilities beyond just waiting tables. “I see this as an opportunity to learn and prepare myself for when I may get promoted,” she said, hoping to reach a managerial position in a restaurant one day. Since joining Dusk, the Attractions, Resorts & Entertainment Union member has been able to grow in confidence under the guidance of her mentor.
